A scope shaped around your matter.

Some matters need more than a single document or a predefined service. We can combine related work, take on an agreed stage or coordinate the mainland China legal work with your existing team.

When a tailored scope makes sense

Linked services

Supplier checks, contract work and a site visit may need to be planned together. We identify which findings must come before the next decision.

Several parties or documents

A supplier, factory, payment recipient and related companies may have different roles. We define which relationships and documents the work will cover.

A project already under way

You may have signed, paid, received a disputed delivery or started work with another adviser. We review the position reached and agree the part we will take on.

One stage at a time

Start with an assessment or a defined document task. Decide on negotiation, proceedings or another stage after reviewing the agreed first deliverable.

Work alongside your advisers

We can coordinate China-side legal questions with overseas counsel, procurement, finance or technical staff, with responsibilities and instructions made clear.

Continuing support

Support over an agreed period can cover specified matters, document work and review capacity. Availability, reporting and work outside that scope are defined in the engagement.

Negotiation support & attendance

We can prepare for and attend negotiations, remotely or in person in mainland China. The work may concern a new contract, changes to an existing arrangement or a proposed resolution of a dispute.

  1. Before the meeting

Review the agreed documents, identify the main points of disagreement and discuss your priorities, options and authority limits. Confirm who will attend, who makes decisions and what must be referred back to you.

  2. During the discussion

Attend in the agreed role, explain legal issues, assist with the discussion of terms and keep track of points agreed and issues left open. We refer decisions outside our authority to you.

  3. Afterwards

Summarise the position and, where included, revise the agreed documents or propose the next legal step. Further meetings, new issues and additional drafts are addressed under the agreed change process.

The scope identifies preparation, expected meetings or attendance time, location, travel, records and follow-up drafting. Attending negotiations does not itself authorise us to sign or commit you to a transaction.

Legal work across mainland China

We are based in Xiamen and handle litigation and non-litigation matters across mainland China. We can travel when the work calls for an on-site presence.

Transactions and non-litigation work

Define the parties and objectives, identify the checks and documents, then agree preparation, negotiation, signing support and any implementation work.

Visits and attendance

Confirm the location, access, people to meet and questions to address. Agree the record or report afterwards, as well as travel and any local coordination.

Litigation and disputes

Identify the facts, evidence, deadlines and current procedural stage. Agree the representation and deliverables for that stage; later proceedings or enforcement are separately identified.

Family and inheritance matters

Organise the family and asset information, overseas records and China-side requirements. Explain which tasks can proceed remotely and what attendance or documents may be needed.

What the proposal will make clear

Responsibility and communication
The responsible lawyer, main contact and anyone else involved. Adrian generally leads commercial matters; June Zhang leads family and inheritance work, with English coordination by Adrian where agreed. We confirm meeting and progress-update arrangements.
The work and its boundaries
Included tasks, parties, document versions, stages and exclusions. Combining services does not make every related issue part of the instruction.
Deliverables and handover
The agreed documents, comments, analysis, records or reports; their format and language; and any explanation or handover meeting included.
Review, revisions and changes
The feedback process, included revision rounds or period, and how new facts or instructions affect the work. Additional negotiations, document sets or stages require agreement before further work begins.
Timing and dependencies
The proposed sequence and timetable, what you need to provide and any dependence on access, other parties or procedural arrangements. Urgent work must be expressly accepted.
Fees, travel and other costs
The fee basis, payment stages, travel and third-party costs, including what needs prior approval. Conflict checks, signed terms and payment confirmation follow the same starting process as our defined services.

How we define the first stage

  1. Understand your objective

Start with a short summary, the parties, relevant locations and any deadline. We identify the likely work and complete the conflict check before accepting the instruction.

  2. Agree the scope

Once the document-sharing arrangements are confirmed, we identify the material needed and propose the stages, deliverables, exclusions, fee and terms. Detailed legal assessment or project design can itself be a paid first stage.

  3. Confirm the start

We sign the engagement, provide payment instructions and confirm cleared funds and any other starting conditions before beginning the agreed paid work.

A limited first look

For a tailored matter, the free scope check identifies whether the proposed work fits and which question or stage should be scoped first. It does not include designing a complete project, reviewing the full file or giving a legal opinion.

One matter and one question; key extracts from up to two documents, no more than five pages in total, after we confirm how to share them. One brief reply and one factual clarification of the same question are included.

Read the limits before sending material

Full document review, drafting, amendments, calls, negotiations, filings and continuing advice are outside this free scope. Public-record searches are included only in a service that expressly offers them; paid database costs and full due diligence are not included here. There is no guaranteed response time. Do not wait for a free reply if the matter is urgent, and do not assume we are handling a deadline without express engagement. Any further work and fee are agreed first; there is no obligation to instruct us.

Tell us what you need to achieve.

Start with a short summary and the parties’ names for a conflict check. Please wait for us to confirm how to share documents before sending sensitive files. Sending an enquiry does not mean we have accepted the instruction.
